MSP No. 63 – SMS Planet
SMS Planet was a survey ship of the Kaiserliche Marine launched on 2 August 1905 and commissioned on 16 November 1905.
Following her commissioning, SMS Planet was ordered to the South Seas, where she would replace the survey ship SMS Möwe I. En route, she surveyed the West African coast, the coastal area between South Africa and Madagascar and the Maldives and Ceylon, and between Sumatra and Java. During these surveys, she discovered the Sunda Trench.
In September 1906, she reached German New Guinea and began surveying German New Guinea and Karolinen. She would continue in this effort until the outbreak of World War I. At the outbreak of war, the crew sailed her to Yap, Karolinen, where she was scuttled on 7 October 1914. Her crew, along with that of SMS Cormoran, was sent to Guam for internment.
