German New Guinea

Inselfahrt

During the colonial period, the large steamship lines only called at the major ports within German New Guinea.  In order to get mail from the smaller outlying settlements to these ports, the government used small, inter-island steamers that weren’t equipped with official postal facililties.  Mail from these inter-island trips, or Inselfahrt, were typically cancelled via provisional means, including manuscript notations and ship’s handstamps.

Postmark Information

During the period from 1903 to 1911, the steamer Siar, which provided inter-island transport for the Neuguinea-Kompagnie, also carried mail to and from islands that weren’t served by official mail steamers.

The mail was cancelled “Siar” via handwriting or a handstamp, then normally received a Deutsch-Neuguinea postal cancel at the first official post office it transited.
