MSP No. 45 – SMS Jaguar

SMS Jaguar was a gunboat of the Kaiserliche Marine launched on 19 September 1898 and commissioned on 4 April 1899.

Upon her commissioning, SMS Jaguar sailed for Ostasiatische Station in Kiautschou, where she was to join the East Asia Squadron.  En route, she stopped in the German colonies in German New Guinea, Karolinen, and Marianan.

While assigned to Ostasiatische Station, she participated in the Boxer Rebellion, and made voyages to the colonies in Marshall-Inseln (1908) and Samoa (1909) to put down local unrest.

At the outbreak of World War I, SMS Jaguar participated in the defense of Tsingtau.  She was damaged in combat against the Imperial Japanese Navy on 4 October 1914, and on the last day of the siege of Tsingtau, 7 November 1914, she was scuttled to prevent her capture.
