Japanese Occupation Chops
On 29 September 1914, Japanese forces captured the Jaluit post office and its remaining postal supplies. Several Japanese naval officers took an unknown quantity of the yacht stamps and applied their personal chops – a chop being a handstamped seal containing the individual’s family name – for philatelic purposes.
These philatelic creations are known with six different chops from five officers – Hibino, Tamura (2 types), Kobayashi, Kanō, and Ōkita.
